I am Victor John ''VeeJay'' Lao from Paranaque City, Philippines. I am an aspiring Author of Both Fiction and Non-fiction books trying to do my best to improve my skill and develop my craft. I love writing, drawing and painting which is a passion of mine even though it is not my talent, I try to do my best to develop a set of skills.
I like creating stories that would entertain and have moral lessons in it. I am into Pop-culture like playing Video Games, watching Anime, reading Comics and looking at Cosplayers. I try to do my best to improve my skills even though it is just my passion and hobby. I also love listening to music of any Genre depending on my mood. I am here to write comics, novels and to share my art.
I do believe practice makes perfect, sometimes even if my best is not enough I just continue to produce more works until I see even a slight improvement. That would already motivate and inspire me enough.
I finally uploaded chapter 1-7 of ''Bunny Syndrome'' I did made a revision back then, so some things may be out of place, I change names of some characters from the earlier version of the story and also change some parts of the story and made cuts. I wrote this story in 2010 as my first draft and made many changes through out the years, now that it's 2020 I probably need to rewrite the whole story in the future somehow for the printed version of the book but I think it currently is a good story so far only in my opinion. I know only few people may or may not get interested in reading the whole story through.
I see some really great Filipino Artists here in Mangaido. It's truly inspiring to see other Filipino's here showing their amazing talent at art and story. I know I am way far from reaching that skill, but I continue to live on with my dream to become a good artist at my current level. I tried making one page comic strips before and send some colored Harry Potter Fan comic to J.K. Rowlings Publisher, Bloomsbury. I guess it's hard to get noticed when your art is still at a childish level. I tried doing commissioned comic strip for Business once and glad there where not much criticism on my first attempt. I want to try doing comics in different mediums of communication.
I love reading Manga both in print and online. Some Comics are free but we must remember we need to buy the books of the Authors in order to support them. It is a horrible feeling when nobody supports your work, Authors need to have a living too and need some inspiration and motivation to continue their work. Even the process of their work may cost something, their chance to survive as an artist in the industry is challenging. We must support other artists work who are just starting out not just the popular and famous ones.
I don't mind buying a Book if it will satisfy me as a reader even if it is self-published and independent. Most Authors today have to give away their works for free in order to get readers and stay away from the darkness of obscurity. I know people only look at talented art works, but they need to consider those who are just starting out. Some may laugh and criticize negatively at how unskilled or untalented an Artist or Author can be. But we need to consider how much effort and time they put on their work.
My Art and Writing is still babyish but I am practicing some more in drawing. It's hard to draw when my hands are shaky and out of balance. I just want to continue practicing and learning more of the Craft. ''Toyz'' was my first try in making a comic book and I think it better than not trying at all. I know I have to take a lot of baby steps before my drawings mature into something many would appreciate. I think I just need to try the 1000 pages practice before I see any development in my drawings and art style. It's a long and bumpy road ahead but I will keep on going forward and onward until I reach my primary goals.
I am still at the point of developing and improving my skills in drawing and art. My First try on making a comic was when I was in High School back in 2001. I took some bond papers and folded it like a book and draw on them. I did not like my jokes back then so discontinued. Only in 2010 I got inspired by a Chinese Comic Artist named Xia Da, she became famous for looking childlike and have photos with a Play station portable in hand. But her comic art is very mature and really talented. J.K. Rowling the Author of Harry Potter was my inspiration for writing a Novel and as usual I am way far away from having the talent and skill of the Authors that inspired me.
I loved reading comics. I have read comics by Marvel and DC, Captain N ''The Game Master'' comics based on the cartoon, Disney comics also based on the cartoons, Comics of Magic ''the Gathering'' which was based on a card game. I also love reading Filipino made comics especially the horror ones and Funny Komiks when the comic industry was still at its peak in the Philippines. I also read comics on newspapers. Now I also consider reading Manga books and other foreign comics.
As an Amateur Writer:
I enjoy and love writing stories, it gives me a medium to express my imagination and create a new world. I know I am nowhere near the standard of professional writing but it is my passion to write. I love writing as a form of communication and an art, making it more of a meaningful and purposeful piece of work or to simply put it a way of expression. I love writing it is my passion, I know I don't have the talent but I can still improve my skill by practice and a lot of study regarding the craft. I know that correct practice makes perfect as my teacher once said in class ''practice is not doing the same things to improve, it is about being consistent in trying your best to become better each time.''
Man unexpressed is the greatest disability, we are all in need of a medium of expression. Writing is just one medium among many arts like visual arts and performing arts. I love to write because I love doing it and I am having fun, I know I need to develop my skill some more in art and in writing.
Starting Out as an Artist:
I think I was better at drawing when I was in Grade School since I practiced a lot back then, now as an adult my drawings became more Babyish and I have to struggle to improve and become a better artist. Some say you need to draw 1000 comic pages to improve your art. I do believe practice makes perfect in any skill, you don't need to be a child prodigy from the beginning to say that you have the talent. But starting as an adult in art is very challenging, you have to keep up with the times. I try to get some inspiration from younger artists with top notch skill level. I just do my best be humble and keep improving every step of the way. There is so much catching up to do and I am not getting any younger. My skills are rusty and need to sharpen it a lot more.
I would like to share all my works for free so that people can read it. I don't want to be in the shadows of obscurity, I want the world to know that my works exist and it is there for people to enjoy. In terms of art, I know there is a lot ahead of me, But I will get there someday where I can have the right to call myself a true artist and Author.
I wrote my first Novel ''Bunny Syndrome'' It is a Story about a Boy who was born with a strange condition, little did the parents know that they were a victim of an experiment by a mad scientist working in the hospital. It is full of mystery and some heartwarming moments some may appreciate. You can Read it for Free here in Mangaido.
I love playing Video Games since I was really young and it has been my past time ever since. I have played on different platforms from Handheld devices, Consoles and Arcade. Some Manga series are adapted into Anime and then to Video Games to Toys. The Merchandise from Manga to Video Games are amazing items to collect if your a fan.
